Breathwork is a tool for healing, self-discovery, and transformation. Whether you’re new to the practice or have dabbled in it before, preparing for your first breathwork session can help you get the most out of the experience. With proper guidance and preparation, you can enter your session feeling confident and ready to embark on a journey of personal growth.
How to Prepare Yourself for Your First Breathwork Session
A transformational breath session is more than just a relaxation technique. Using certain breathing patterns, it engages you to free emotional blocks, reduce stress and communicate fully with your inner self. Here are some tips and insight about what to expect, and guidance on how to work with a breathwork facilitator.
- Set an Intention
It can make a big difference to go into your breathwork session having a clear intention. It could be wanting to let go of stress, get to the point of emotional release, or digest past trauma. Share your intention with the breathwork facilitator, who will then lead you through the session.
- Wear Comfortable Clothing
You’ll want to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing, since you’re often lying on your back and breathing deeply and rhythmically. What you want is for your body to be free to move and breathe as much as possible without any interruption or distraction.
- Hydrate and Avoid Heavy Meals
Before your session, it’s important to stay hydrated but avoid heavy meals. Also, avoid too much caffeine before your session, as it could interfere with your concentration during the session. Just have a healthy snack or a light meal a couple of hours before your session.
- Create a Comfortable Space
In case of a virtual or private session, choose a place free of distractions and create a quiet environment, where you can’t be disturbed. You can make it better with dimmable lighting, a cushion or mat that is comfortable, and some quiet music.
- Trust the Process
While breathwork can be extremely profound in allowing you to release powerful emotions, or a deep relaxation, it’s normal to feel a bit unsettled in the beginning. Trust the process and trust the current path that is unfolding. If you feel discomfort at any point, your breathwork facilitator will help you get through it.
What to Expect During Your First Session
At your first breathwork session, you will be led by a trained breathwork facilitator. They will guide you through different breathing patterns. When you breathe your body may release pent up emotions or physical tension. That’s all just part of the healing process, you may feel light headed, tingly, or even get waves of emotion.
As you progress through the session, your trained breathwork facilitator will help keep you safe by telling you what to do, and checking on you. However, keep in mind that while breathwork dangers are few and rare, they do exist for certain individuals. So, for people with certain health conditions like asthma, heart problems, or a history of mental health, it is recommended to see a doctor before practicing breathwork.
